We All Fall Down

Dear Diary,

Today Ms. Simmons is back out again, even though she just got back from her honeymoon. We have a sub. We’re watching the news, supposedly, but I’m writing under the desk. All the old substitutes are fairly clueless. Oh, God. Julia just threw up outside; the news has a lot of blood and guts…something about “Ebola”. Anyway, Seth is comforting her! I mean, I know he’s her boyfriend, but why is he hers??? Why can’t his green-silver eyed and auburn haired hotness be mine? Uggh!

Later, the sub’s glaring at me.

Ash Wednesday

Ps: Ms. Simmons is sick. She has this Ebola thing. Wonder if we’ll get a permanent new teacher.

I’m Ash in case you haven’t guessed. My full name is Ashley Wednesday, but it took all of ten minutes for my middle school to figure out what my nickname sounds like. But I still go by it. That diary entry is illicit material. It was written by me, before the quarantine, without any disinfectant. The Center would kill me if they found out, but I couldn’t just throw my diary out! It’s my only remnant of the past, before everyone became paranoid and worried and infected. I don’t even have my parents anymore.

The Infection came six years and two days ago. Officially it’s called the Ebola virus, but now to say the word aloud would be to curse someone. People fear it. My sixth grade teacher, Ms. Victoria Simmons, was the first person in the United States to get the illness. She was showing no major symptoms when she got on the airplane back out here to California. She had been on her honeymoon safari in Africa, and was just going to come back. She had no idea that the little headache she had would turn into the worst disaster in the history of the world.
